Zero Waste & Double The Fun
Our Fire & Hide clutch combines rescued luxury leather and decommissioned fire-hose and is lined with reclaimed parachute silk. For this handmade-to-order piece we collaborated with two heroes of longevity and waste elimination - Tara Button, founder of BuyMeOnce and zero waste activist, Kate Arnell, of eco boost. Tara and Kate each selected the colours and pattern for one half of this split personality piece and chose the lining and trim together. As you can only see one side of a clutch bag at once, why not opt for two styles instead of one? In honour of our collaborators, we are calling this cutie 'The Tate'.
Tara Button: It was fascinating to see the innovative way that Elvis & Kresse take waste materials and turn them into stunning, useful products. Getting the chance to design a bag of my own was so exciting. First, picking a colour scheme I loved from the leather off-cuts and then experimenting and creating a pattern which appealed to me. It was such a gratifying experience to see it all come together. I chose a nature-inspired colour scheme to represent the natural environment we're so passionate about protecting. I took the colours and arranged the leather pieces into an organic pattern I loved. Once it had been woven together, I realised it complimented the summer dress I was wearing perfectly which was a lovely surprise.
Kate Arnell: Having the chance to design a bag piece-by-piece was extremely rewarding and reminded me that as an adult I allow very little time for hands-on creativity and yet the process, of seeing how Elvis & Kresse transform waste materials into beautiful accessories, reminded me just how necessary this type of creativity is for a sustainable future. I was drawn to the rich berry colours of the leather and seeing as I like simple patterns without any fuss, I arranged them in a diagonal block formation which I personally find really pleasing to look at. The end result worked better than I could have imagined and I couldn't wait to see The Tate Bag come to life!
Everyone engages with a clutch in a slightly different way, but we wanted to make this practical shape work for everyone. The strap can be removed, attached at both ends, or looped onto one of the side hooks. We have counted 5 ways of carrying this so far and leave the rest to your imagination. You can even choose the length of strap: the Standard classic length strap, the over-the-shoulder adjustable Long strap or the ultimate in flexibility, Both straps!
Our Fire & Hide Clutches are also available in several classic colours, but if you have been inspired by our collaboration with Tara and Kate, why not join one of our workshops and choose your own colours and pattern?
The Fire & Hide Collection
In 2005 we fell in love with London's decommissioned fire-hose. Determined to save it from landfill we took this lifesaving material home, gave it a second chance, and vowed to donate 50% of the profits to the Fire Fighters Charity. But fire-hose was just the beginning.
Every year, 800,000 tonnes of leather ends up on the cutting room floor. Our leather partners cherish their hides, but no matter how carefully they cut their patterns, there will always be small seemingly unusable offcuts. To rescue this leather we developed a unique modular approach. We hand weave these fragments into whole new hides then lovingly recraft them into sustainable luxury bags and accessories. Our commitment to rescuing British fire-hoses remains the same, the trim, handles and internal detailing of the Fire & Hide range are all made from genuine decommissioned fire-hose. And we continue to donate 50% of profits to charity.
Our Fire & Hide Collection represents a whole new kind of luxury. One that is sustainable, ethical, transparent, generous and kind.
